Karnataka Tourist Destinations - MYSORE
Mysore is a major tourist city of Karnataka. The city was the erstwhile capital of the state and hence has played an important role in the history of the state and of South India. Today it has developed into a modern city like many other cities in the country. But this city has not lost touch with its rich historical and cultural legacy. Mysore city is a favourite tourist destination in Karnataka. Tourist from within the country and from outside come see the splendour of the city of Mysore. The city has a number of places a person can visit. There are a number of Royal buildings, gardens, waterfalls, temples, museums and modern amusement parks.
The city of Mysore is known as the 'City Of Palaces'. There are number of buildings built by the Royal family and are exquisite examples of Dravidian architecture and display grandeur and lavish life lead by the Emperors while they ruled the state. Apart from the Palaces there are number of other tourists attractions that one can visit in Mysore. One of the popular spots is the Chamundi hills and the temple on top of the hills. This prominent landmark of Mysore is a favourite destination for the locales as well.
MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN MYSORE
    Chamarajendra Art Gallery

The Jaganmohan Palace house this art gallery, which has a vast collection of paintings by renowned artists like Ravi Varma and Nicholas Roerich. Also on display here are curios in ceramics, sandalwood, ivory, ancient musical instruments and furniture.

  Kabani Jungle Lodge

Located in the eastern fringes of Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary. The lush, thick forests and the Kabani river, provide a perfect habitat for many wild animals and birds.

   Krishnarajendra Dam-Brindavan Gardens

A dam was constructed across the river Kaveri during the reign of his Highness Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar Bahadur. This is situated at a distance of about 12kms to the north-west of Mysore. The dam was built keeping in view of a constant supply of water for electric installation at shivanasamundram which was put up in 1902, and to have adequate supply of water for summer crop. When the dam is full, its water level reaches a height of 124 feet.

   Maharaja's Palace
The palace is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Mysore. The English Architect, Henry Irwin had designed the palace, which is an architectural marvel with its sculpted pillars, Intricately carved doors, the golden howdah.
   The Jaganmohan Palace
This is another beautiful building in Mysore. It was an alternative retreat for the royal family of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar. This three-storeyed palace with stained glass shutters and ventilators, in a lovely garden setting has now been converted to an art gallery. This museum displays paintings, sculptures and musical instruments. 
   Chamundi Hills
Goddess Chamundi was the patron deity of the royal family of Mysore. At the outskirts of the city the temple serves as a prominent landmark. Close to the temple, there is a statue of Mahishasura, the demon slayed by the goddess Chamundeshwari and a tall monolith of Nandi, Lord Shiva's pet. 
   Brindavan Gardens
The picturesque waterfalls, the Ganganchukki and the Bharachukki, cascade down 90 meters. These falls are the source of Asia's first Hydro Electric Power Statin called "Shimsa". The falls are in full splendour during July-August. 
   Devarayanadurga
A little away from Mysore, the beautiful Brindavan Gardens is located just below the famous reservoir Krishnarajasagaraon on the river Cauvery. The musical fountain in the garden is one of the most notable tourist attractions in Mysore. 
   Somanathapura Temple
Nearly 42 kms from Mysore, the temple is famous for its elaborate detail and markedly from different the other Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebid. 
   St. Philomena's Church
The Gothic structure is modeled on Cathedral at Cologne. The altar bears the statue of St. Philomena, a third century saint from Greece.
